Hafner Vineyard

About the Winery

Hafner Vineyard began with a game of horseshoes. In the summer of 1967 Dick Hafner, having just lost a game, told his partner, a farm broker, to let him know if a wine country ranch came up for sale. Two weeks later Dick and Mary drove to a 96-acre Alexander Valley ranch of prunes, pears and a little Zinfandel, the only property they ever looked at, and on November 1, 1967 it became Hafner Vineyard. Their son Parke studied at UC Davis, worked harvests in Napa and Burgundy, and with his wife Sarah built the winery; the first vintage was 1982. His brother Scott runs the business, and Parke and Sarah's daughters, Kate and Grace, are the third generation.

The family farms about 100 of its 250 acres, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec and Petit Verdot, and leaves the rest as oak woodland, creek habitat and open space along Sausal Creek. They have farmed without herbicides for more than 30 years, cultivating under the vines with an electric tractor. The wines are made only from the estate, aged longer in barrel than most, and sold only directly, never through distributors or shops.

There are no hospitality staff and no public signs here; every visit is led by a member of the family. The 90-minute tour starts with a glass under the valley oaks, moves through the vineyard and the cellar, and ends in the wine caves with a comparative tasting of barrel samples, current releases and library vintages. It is the kind of visit guests talk about all trip, and part of our job is simply knowing the way in.

Tasting Fees

$40 per person for the 90-minute Tour & Wine Tasting through the vineyard, winery and caves, waived with a three-bottle purchase.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:05 a.m. from a hotel such as Hotel Trio in Healdsburg or Geyserville Inn.

10:05 · Pickup at Hotel Trio or Geyserville Inn

Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of Healdsburg, is about 20 minutes from Garden Creek, our first stop, and Geyserville Inn, at the north end of Geyserville, about 15. Hafner's tour is at 2 p.m., so we save it for the afternoon. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:30 · Garden Creek

About 20 minutes away. Justin and Karin Warnelius-Miller host every visit themselves: a walk through estate Cabernet vines first planted in 1969, then a candlelit tasting in the barrel room of Tesserae, a Cabernet and Merlot blend aged eight years before release. The Private Winetasting & Tour is $125. By request, with visits generally beginning at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday to Saturday.

11:35 · Bellacana Vineyards

About 5 minutes away. The first tribally owned winery in the United States, owned by the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, on a 138-acre estate along the Russian River; the name means beautiful river, and the label shows a Pomo basket. The Estate Tasting is $125, and the Bread & Butter Experience, a Brut and three estate Cabernets side by side with truffle chips, baguette, butters, coppa and Manchego, is $150. By appointment only.

12:45 · Lunch at Catelli's

About 10 minutes away. Santi and Virginia Catelli opened this Geyserville restaurant in 1936, and their granddaughter, chef Domenica Catelli, carries on the family's handmade Italian cooking. Open Wednesday to Sunday from noon; we reserve the table for you. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:00 · Hafner Vineyard

About 15 minutes away. The 90-minute Tour & Wine Tasting ($40), led by the family: the valley oaks, the vineyard, the cellar and a tasting of barrel samples and library vintages in the caves.

3:30 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 3:50 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Hafner's scheduled tours are on the first and third Friday of the month, and Garden Creek hosts Tuesday to Saturday, so this day is built for those Fridays; on other weekdays we ask the Hafners for an appointment.

About $290 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
