About the Winery

Bellacana is owned by the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, whose ancestors have lived in Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys for at least 10,000 years, and it is the first tribally owned winery in the United States. The name joins the Italian bella, beautiful, with cana, the Southern Pomo word for the flow of water: the beautiful river, after the Russian River that runs past the vineyard. The label shows a Pomo basket filled with grapes, oak branches and acorns, and the tribe's baskets are in the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, which also carries the wines.

The 138-acre estate along the Russian River grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay with sustainable and organic practices, and morning and evening fog lets the fruit ripen slowly. The flagship is the Alexander Valley hillside Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate. Winemaker Luke Stanko, formerly of Ram's Gate, joined in 2021, viticulturist Chris Walden farms the vineyard, and Master of Wine Bob Paulinski advises the team.

Visits are by appointment at the estate vineyard on Highway 128, and the hosts welcome guests as ka:de, the Pomo word for guest. Each experience is seated and built around side-by-side tastings of the estate Cabernet: the Estate Tasting, a Bread & Butter Experience that starts with Brut sparkling wine and truffle chips and moves to coppa, Manchego and artisan butters, and a pairing with chocolates from Fleur Sauvage.

Tasting Fees

$125 for the Estate Tasting of estate wines. $150 for the Bread & Butter Experience: a taste of Brut, then three wines side by side focused on the estate hillside Cabernet, with truffle chips, baguette, three butters, coppa and Manchego. $175 for the Chocolate Experience, three wines side by side with chocolates from Fleur Sauvage.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:05 a.m. from a hotel such as Hotel Trio in Healdsburg or Geyserville Inn.

10:05 · Pickup at Hotel Trio or Geyserville Inn

Hotel Trio, on Dry Creek Road on the north side of Healdsburg, is about 20 minutes from Garden Creek, and Geyserville Inn, at the north end of Geyserville, about 15. Garden Creek's visits begin at 10:30, so we start there and reach Bellacana, five minutes down the road, before lunch. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:30 · Garden Creek

About 20 minutes away. Justin and Karin Warnelius-Miller host every visit themselves: a walk through estate Cabernet vines first planted in 1969, then a candlelit tasting in the barrel room of Tesserae, a Cabernet and Merlot blend aged eight years before release. The Private Winetasting & Tour is $125. By request, with visits generally beginning at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday to Saturday.

11:35 · Bellacana Vineyards

About 5 minutes away. The Bread & Butter Experience ($150) or the Estate Tasting ($125), seated, with the estate hillside Cabernet side by side.

12:45 · Lunch at Diavola

About 10 minutes away. Chef Dino Bugica's restaurant in a historic building on Geyserville Avenue, with Neapolitan-style pizza from a wood-burning oven, handmade pasta and house-cured salumi. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:20 · Chalk Hill Estate

About 30 minutes away. Fred Furth founded Chalk Hill in 1972 after spotting the land from his plane; more than two-thirds of the 1,300-acre estate is left wild, and tastings are poured in an elevated tasting room and on a patio looking out over the vines. The Taste of Estate Flight of four reserve wines is $75, about 90 minutes. Open daily 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; reservations encouraged.

3:50 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 4:15 p.m.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Garden Creek hosts Tuesday to Saturday and Bellacana is by appointment, so this day works Tuesday to Saturday, and it ends around 4:15; extra time can be added by the hour.

About $325 to $350 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
