About the Winery

Bill Frick caught the wine bug at 8, on a family tour of the Italian Swiss Colony winery in Asti, a few miles up the road from where he farms today. He and his late wife, Judith Gannon, started Frick Winery in 1976 with the proceeds from selling their 1957 Chevrolet, crushing grapes with a pitchfork and hand presses. 2026 is his 50th year, and when guests ask when he will retire, his answer is never.

Everything Frick makes is Rhône varieties grown on 7.77 hillside acres in the northern part of Dry Creek Valley: Carignane, Cinsaut, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Viognier. The Owl Hill vineyard climbs four steep acres with a view over the valley, and the tiny Garibaldi vineyard is a field blend of 110-year-old vines, Mission, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane and more, that gives about one barrel a year. Bill still makes every wine by hand, punching down by hand, with no fining and long aging in small oak barrels.

A visit is refreshingly simple: a standing tasting at the bar in the Frick Tasting House on Walling Road, with all of the current small-batch releases open and often Bill himself pouring. It is free, it takes about 30 minutes, and it is the opposite of a polished tasting salon.

Tasting Fees

Free: Frick does not charge for tastings of its current releases.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
