About the Winery

Music led Dominic, Domesday's winemaker, to wine: he was drawn to the way a great song reveals something new each time you return to it, and he finds the same in a bottle opened years later. He started in the wine business in Los Angeles as a certified sommelier, then earned a certificate in winemaking from UC Davis and worked in both the cellar and the vineyard before starting Domesday.

Domesday works with growers throughout Northern California and lets each vineyard speak in its own voice rather than chasing a house style; as the winery puts it, there are thousands of Grenaches in the world, but only one Satyr. The lineup includes Grenache, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vermentino. The name nods to the Domesday survey of England in 1086, and the labels draw on folklore, old maps, fantasy novels and heavy metal album covers, under the motto "Embrace the wyrd" (Old English for fate).

Domesday shares its Hyde Road property with the Sonocaia Estate, and the visit is a joint tasting: Dominic leads a seated, unhurried tasting that sets his wines beside Sonocaia's estate-grown Sagrantino, two very different approaches to California wine side by side. Groups are kept small, and there is plenty of time for questions about vineyards, vintages and how each wine was made.

12:00 · Roche Winery

About 20 minutes away. The Select Tasting of four wines is $35 and the Reserve Tasting $45, each with the coming vintage tasted from the barrel. 2:20 · Larson Family Winery

About 10 minutes away. Five generations of Larsons on a former Carneros dairy farm that hosted Northern California's largest rodeo from 1928 into the 1950s. Tastings are outdoors year-round, with gliders, cabanas and bocce in the pasture, and the farm's Labradors usually come to say hello. The hosted Daily Flight is $35 and the Reserve Flight $45, each 90 minutes. Open Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended.

3:50 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sonoma by 4:05 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Larson is open Thursday to Monday and Angelo's closes on Tuesday, so this day works Thursday to Monday.

About $120 to $140 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
