About the Winery
Corner 103 was founded by Lloyd Davis, a New Yorker who spent more than 30 years in banking and finance and fell for the wine business while advising a New York wine retailer. He left finance in 2008 to take over Viansa Winery, and he opened Corner 103 to teach wine in a friendly, non-intimidating way and to show how wine and food work together. Ron Goss, whom Lloyd met at Viansa, is the winemaker, and Brent Johnson manages the tasting room.
The wines are made from Sonoma grapes and have won a long list of competition medals. The point here is less a single vineyard than learning what you like: Lloyd's view is that anyone who knows what they enjoy is already a wine expert. Corner 103 was voted the No. 1 tasting room by USA Today.
Every tasting is private and built around your group, with your own wine educator. The Food & Wine Pairing is the signature: each wine comes with two small bites, the second changing one element, so you taste in the moment how food shifts what is in the glass. There is also a pairing of six wines with six artisan cheeses, and a straight tasting of any five wines. The room is on West Napa Street at the corner of the plaza, which makes it an easy first stop before we head out of town.

Groups are limited to 4 guests, and no one under 21 is allowed. Because of allergies, the tasting room is not dog friendly. Cards are charged 48 hours before the visit; confirm 48 hours ahead to avoid a cancellation fee equal to the tasting fee. The whole table has the same pairing, and menus cannot be changed.

MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, and The Lodge at Sonoma, on Broadway south of the plaza, are each about 5 minutes from Corner 103. Corner 103 opens at 11 a.m., so we time the pickup to arrive for the first tasting. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

About 5 minutes away. A small restaurant on East Napa Street, a few steps from the Sonoma Plaza, serving lunch Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations open a month ahead, for parties of up to 6, and we book the table with the rest of the day. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 20 minutes away. Walter Schug made the first Insignia at Joseph Phelps before founding his own Pinot Noir house in Carneros in 1980, and he helped establish the Carneros AVA. The private Estate Cave Experience starts with a glass of sparkling wine and a guided stroll through the cave before a seated tasting, 90 minutes ($65). Monday to Saturday; reservations highly recommended.

About 20 minutes away. Kathryn Walt Hall's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house, pouring single-vineyard wines from Oregon to the Sta. Rita Hills just off the northwest corner of the Sonoma Plaza. The Wine & Chocolate Pairing of four single-vineyard Pinot Noirs with Fleur Sauvage chocolates is $60, and the Current Release Tasting $40. Open daily until 5:30 p.m., last tasting at 4:30; reservations recommended.

Corner 103 opens at 11, so this day starts later. Cafe La Haye serves lunch Tuesday to Saturday and Schug is open Monday to Saturday, so the day works Tuesday to Saturday. Corner 103 takes groups of up to 4.
