About the Winery

Cochon began in 2004, when owner and winemaker Adam Webb and his co-founder, Mike Kuenz, agreed to buy the grapes from two rows of an old-vine Grenache vineyard in Amador County. It grew into the Odisea Wine Company, which makes three labels: Cochon, Gardienne des Vignes and Elévé.

The focus is old-vine fruit from Northern California, with Rhône, Burgundian and Alsatian varieties made with a light hand: native yeasts whenever possible and restraint with oak and sulfur. Recent bottlings include Cochon Grenache from the Mathis Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, Cherry Ridge Syrah, Picpoul Blanc, Roussanne, old-vine Cinsault and rosé, Les Bulles Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine, Gardienne old-vine Zinfandel from the Collins Vineyard and Elévé Cabernet Sauvignon from Moon Mountain and Mount Veeder.

The Cochon Tasting Bar is just off the Sonoma Square on First Street East, with a covered patio. Besides wine flights it pours wine by the glass, fills growlers and serves cheese and charcuterie boards and European-style espresso, which makes it an easygoing first stop of the day. Groups larger than six call ahead for an appointment.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:50 a.m. from a Sonoma hotel such as Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place.

10:50 · Pickup at Ledson Hotel or MacArthur Place

Ledson Hotel, on the east side of the Sonoma Plaza, and MacArthur Place, a few blocks south of the plaza, are each about 5 minutes from the Cochon Tasting Bar. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

11:00 · Cochon Wines

A wine flight at the tasting bar, about an hour; add a cheese and charcuterie board if you like.

12:10 · Lunch at the girl & the fig

About 5 minutes away. Sondra Bernstein's restaurant on the Sonoma Plaza, serving French country cooking from a seasonal menu, with cheese and charcuterie, a Rhône-focused wine list and a garden patio. Open from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

1:40 · Nicholson Ranch

About 15 minutes away. An all-estate winery on Nicholson family land in the southern foothills of Sonoma Valley, where Napa, Sonoma and four appellations meet. The Cave Tour and Tasting walks the vineyard and winery and goes down into the underground cellars, tasting five Estate and Reserve wines on the way ($75, by appointment, 2 to 8 guests). Open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

3:15 · Bartholomew Estate Winery

About 20 minutes away. Owned by the nonprofit Bartholomew Foundation, inside a 375-acre park on the land where Agoston Haraszthy began making wine in 1857, with tastings in an art gallery or, in season, outdoors on the Oak Knoll over the vineyards. The seated Wine Tasting Flight is $45 to $55, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Reservations recommended; open daily 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

4:30 · Back to your hotel

Back in Sonoma by 4:40 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a relaxed day. Cochon and the girl & the fig are both near the plaza, so the afternoon heads out of town, to the cave at Nicholson Ranch and the Haraszthy land at Bartholomew.

About $120 to $130 per person in tasting fees for Nicholson Ranch and Bartholomew, paid directly to each winery. Cochon's flight prices are to be verified upon reservation.
