Cazadero Winery is Frank and Ronita Egger's two-person, family winery, with winemaker Ashley Herzberg in the cellar since 2017. The family story starts in 1918, when the Eggers crossed the Golden Gate on a ferry named Cazadero and rode the rails north to the redwoods and fog at the end of the line. They planted their first vines in 1922 and lost the ranch in the Depression; Frank and Ronita later revived the dream and built the winery from scratch.
Every wine is 100% varietal and single-vineyard, from grapes grown on the fog line of the Sonoma Coast. The winery uses native yeast and French oak, foot-stomps the Cabernet, and leaves the reds unfined and unfiltered, with barn owls and sheep working the vineyard rows. Current wines include the 2021 Hummingbird Hill Pinot Noir and Bei Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon from a ridge farmed for ninety years, at $59 a bottle, and the winery counts 212 gold and silver medals.
There is no tasting room: the home office is in Fairfax, and the wine is stored and shipped from Healdsburg. Bottles are sold online, through a free Cellar List that hears first about new releases, and at restaurants and wine shops across Marin, Sonoma and San Francisco. The day below starts on the Russian River in Guerneville, on the road to the coast, and visits three estates that do host.
Cazadero Winery does not offer tastings. On the day below, the Korbel cellar tour is free (a bar flight is $15), Hartford's Vineyard Exploration is $60, and Iron Horse's Tasting with a View is $35.
Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

About 5 minutes away. A historic champagne house on the Russian River, founded in 1882. The one-hour tour of the museum and cellar is free and ends with a taste of champagne; a flight of four at the bar is $15. Tours run at 10:30 a.m.; no reservation needed.
About 15 minutes away. The restaurant at Farmhouse Inn in Forestville serves season-driven farm-to-table cooking at breakfast, lunch and dinner; we confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. A family estate in the redwoods near Forestville making single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and old-vine Zinfandel. The Vineyard Exploration, a seated tasting of five single-vineyard wines on the patio, is $60; we plan about an hour. Open daily by appointment.
About 20 minutes away. Estate sparkling wine served at the White House since 1985, tasted outdoors above the Green Valley. The Tasting with a View is $35, with seatings on the hour; we book the 3 p.m. seating and plan about an hour.
Back by about 4:25 p.m., about six hours after pickup.
All three wineries are open daily. Sophie's Cellars in Duncans Mills, about 15 minutes west of Guerneville, pours Cazadero's wines; ask us to add a stop there if you want to taste them.
