Alan Baker, who came from public radio, and Serena Lourie, from healthcare, met in 2008 at the Crushpad custom-crush winery in San Francisco, where Alan was making Pinot Noir under his Cellar Rat Cellars label and Serena came to learn the craft. After a long shift that November they sat on the curb outside and hatched Cartograph, then moved to Healdsburg with two barrels, 50 cases, of Pinot Noir. Each label carries a map of the road that brought them together.
Cartograph makes about 1,800 cases a year, mainly Pinot Noir, with dry, crisp whites in the style of Alsace, Riesling and Gewürztraminer, and California sparkling wine. The aim is nuance and balance, which means picking a little earlier than most and a light hand in the cellar, and since buying its Dry Creek property in 2023 the winery has added bolder reds: Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It is a certified B Corp and a member of 1% for the Planet.
For years Cartograph poured a block north of the Healdsburg plaza; now guests come to the Dry Creek property that will be its permanent home. While the main building is under construction, the Benchmark Tasting is poured al fresco on the Olive Grove patio, on the cottage porch or in the cottage, with a rotating lineup that has lately included a dry Rosé, a dry Riesling and two library Pinot Noirs, plus a special pour added each month.
$30 per person for the Benchmark Tasting, charged at the visit; complimentary for Circle members.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
