About the Winery

In 1885 an Italian immigrant, Bartholomew Lagomarsino, planted Zinfandel and Petite Sirah on this land in Santa Rosa. More than a century later, in 1988, Giuseppe "Joe" Battaglini and his wife, Lucia, bought the dormant Lagomarsino property. Joe was raised in Lucca, in Tuscany, and learned the wine business from his grandfather, Giulio; the couple made their first wine from the 1994 vintage, released in 1996, just 250 cases. The winery is still family owned and run.

Today Battaglini makes about 2,500 cases a year from 25 acres of old Zinfandel and Petite Sirah vines, which the family counts among the oldest of those varieties in the United States, along with Chardonnay planted in 1996. The farming and winemaking are traditional: head-pruned vines, picking by hand, natural fermentation and no chemical treatments in the vineyard.

The tasting room has an Italian feel, with antique winemaking tools, competition medals on the walls and a bocce court outside. The standard tasting pours at least six wines, from unoaked and oaked Chardonnay and rosato to the 1885-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, and the VIP Tasting and Tour is hosted by a family member, with barrel tastings, a walk through the winery and vineyard and the chance to have your bottles signed.

Tasting Fees

$25 per person for the one-hour tasting of at least six wines, and $75 for the two-hour VIP Tasting and Tour.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
