About the Winery

Bailarín Cellars was created by a collective of family and friends, each following a passion, from growing grapes and making wine to running the company and drawing the hand-drawn logo. Bailarín, pronounced bai-la-reen, is Spanish for dancer, and the winery uses it for people who love what they do; its motto asks, What makes you dance? The proprietors include executive director Chris Ryan, co-founder Brianne Suacci and winemaker Will Weese of Healdsburg.

Weese works directly with a short list of growers whose vineyards have a story: the Suacci, Bacigalupi and Alegría vineyards in the Russian River Valley, Madden in Dry Creek Valley, Mila in Alexander Valley, Indian Springs Ranch in Sonoma Valley and Rockpile, plus Manchester Ridge in Mendocino and Soberanes and Highlands Ranch in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The style is traditional, letting the fruit speak without heavy oak, and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the flagships, along with a well-loved rosé and a Bordeaux-style white from Indian Springs Ranch.

Bailarín has no tasting room in Sonoma County; its website lists a tasting room in downtown Sacramento. The wine is sold through its wine club, with spring and fall allocations, its online store and restaurants and shops, many of them in Sacramento. For a day in the Russian River Valley, we take guests to small wineries nearby that do open their doors.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a Santa Rosa hotel such as Vinarosa or Hotel E.

10:00 · Pickup at Vinarosa or Hotel E

Vinarosa, set among 92 acres of vineyards in Santa Rosa, and Hotel E, a restored 1906 Beaux-Arts landmark on the square in downtown Santa Rosa, are each about 10 minutes from Krutz Family Cellars. Since Bailarín Cellars does not host visitors in Sonoma County, this day takes you to three sought-after wineries nearby that do. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Krutz Family Cellars

About 10 minutes away. Three brothers from Jackson, Mississippi, make Napa Valley Cabernet from their own block of Beckstoffer Georges III, the old Beaulieu Vineyard No. 3, alongside Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, in a Santa Rosa winery where the tasting room and the cellar share one roof; winemaker Cole Krutz is happy to host guests for a tasting and tour. The fee is confirmed when we book. By appointment only.

11:45 · Ceritas

About 30 minutes away. John Raytek's coastal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay house, making wine since 2005 from dry-farmed, often old-vine grower sites on the West Sonoma Coast and in the Santa Cruz Mountains, several of which sell to Ceritas alone. The Ceritas Tasting, with a member of the winemaking team at its working winery in downtown Healdsburg, is about 90 minutes; we confirm the fee when we book. By appointment only, Wednesday to Sunday, up to 8 guests.

1:20 · Lunch at Bravas Bar de Tapas

About 5 minutes away. James Beard finalists Mark and Terri Stark's tapas bar on Center Street, steps from the Healdsburg plaza, with paella, Spanish wines and tables indoors or outside. Open daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:25 · Idlewild Wines

About 5 minutes away. Sam Bilbro's wines from Piedmont's grapes, Arneis, Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo, grown in the high hills of Mendocino and Sonoma, poured with prosciutto, salumi and Italian cheeses a stone's throw from the Healdsburg plaza. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations recommended. We confirm the fee when we book.

3:25 · Back to your hotel

Back in Santa Rosa by 3:55 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Ceritas and Idlewild host Wednesday to Sunday, so this day works Wednesday to Sunday.

Tasting fees at Krutz Family Cellars, Ceritas and Idlewild are not published and are to be verified upon reservation; each is paid directly to the winery.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
