About the Winery

Annapolis Winery is the Scalabrini family's small winery in the hills of Annapolis, at the far north end of the Sonoma Coast. Basil and Barbara Scalabrini moved to Annapolis from Marin County in 1976 and planted their vineyard in 1978, replacing an old apple orchard. The first wine, a 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon, was made in a redwood grove at the top of the hill, and the family built the winery in 1987.

The vineyard sits at about 1,000 feet, five and a half miles from the Pacific, with cool coastal breezes, sandy low-vigor soils and plenty of sun. The family farms sustainably without synthetic pesticides, picks by hand and does not fine the wines. Production is very small: a Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and a late harvest Gewürztraminer.

It is a family-run, unhurried stop, with a large outdoor picnic area, some of it shaded, and views of the vineyard and surrounding forest. It pairs well with a day on the coast between The Sea Ranch and Bodega Bay. We confirm current details when we book.

Tasting Fees

Annapolis Winery does not publish a tasting fee. We confirm the current fee when we book.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 11:15 a.m. from Timber Cove on the coast near Jenner. Annapolis Winery is about 45 minutes north. Guests at The Sea Ranch Lodge are about 20 minutes from the winery, and we adjust the timing.

11:15 · Pickup at Timber Cove

Timber Cove is on a bluff above the Pacific on Highway 1. Annapolis is about 45 minutes north, up the coast and into the hills, and the nearest other tasting rooms are far down the coast, so the day is planned around two wineries with lunch in between. Extra time can be added by the hour.

12:00 · Annapolis Winery

A tasting of the family's small-lot wines, about an hour, with time on the picnic grounds. Open daily from noon in summer; in winter by appointment. We confirm the fee when we book.

1:45 · Lunch at Timber Cove

About 45 minutes away. Lunch back on the coast at the Timber Cove restaurant, with ocean views from the bluff. The resort lists lunch from noon to 3 p.m.; we confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic for the Annapolis Winery picnic area instead; the cost is quoted when you book.

3:25 · Sonoma Coast Vineyards

About 45 minutes away. Cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay poured on a terrace over Bodega Bay. The Taste of the Coast, a guided flight of four current releases, is $35; plan on about an hour.

4:25 · Back to your hotel

Back by 5:15 p.m., six hours after pickup.

Annapolis Winery is open daily from noon in summer and by appointment in winter, so outside summer we set the appointment first and plan the day around it. Sonoma Coast Vineyards is open daily, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

About $35 per person at Sonoma Coast Vineyards, plus the Annapolis Winery tasting fee, which we confirm when we book. Fees are paid directly to each winery.
