About the Winery
Rudy Zuidema grew up in Davis, studied plant science and viticulture at UC Davis, graduating in 1991, and moved to Napa in 1992. He started in the cellar at St. Clement and went on to work at Cuvaison, Honig, Ehlers Estate and White Cottage Ranch, and he has long made wine at Shadybrook Estate in Coombsville. Zuidema Wine Co. is his own label and winemaking consultancy.
The label makes one red a year, and it is an unusual one for Napa Valley: Grenache from McGah Family Vineyards in the Rutherford AVA. Rudy takes just over an acre of a 3.5-acre Grenache block, destems the fruit, ferments it in open-top tanks and ages it in Pennsylvania oak barrels, 20 percent new. A Grenache rosé from the same vineyard joins it.
Production is tiny and almost all of it is sold direct, much of it through Instagram; current releases include the 2021 Grenache and the 2022 Grenache Rosé, ordered through zuidemawines.com. Zuidema Wine Co. publishes no tasting room or tastings, so the day below takes you to three Rutherford and Oakville estates nearby that do host.

About 12 minutes away. A family Sangiovese vineyard in Oakville, replanted from the family's own Rodeno clone budwood after phylloxera, with Michaela Rodeno, St. Supéry's CEO for 21 years, helping run it. By appointment; the fee is confirmed when we book. We allow about an hour.
