Sutter Home dates to 1890. In 1948 the Trinchero family, who had left New York City to start over in California's young wine industry, reopened the winery after Prohibition. The family still owns it today through Trinchero Family Estates.
In 1972 Bob Trinchero drew juice off Zinfandel using the saignée method and fermented it dry, a pale wine that was Sutter Home's first White Zinfandel. In 1975 a stuck fermentation left a batch pink and slightly sweet, and that style became Sutter Home White Zinfandel. By 1987 it was the best-selling premium wine in the country, and in 1994 Wine Spectator honored Bob Trinchero for introducing more Americans to wine than anyone in history.
The tasting room sits on Highway 29 just south of downtown St. Helena, in the St. Helena AVA. No reservation is needed for the walk-in flights: Sips of Sweetness, Dry & Defined Delights, and Mindful Sips, a flight of alcohol-removed wines. It is a relaxed, friendly stop and one of the most affordable tastings in the valley.
$10 for a Custom Tasting of any three wines from the menu, by reservation. $15 for a walk-in flight: Sips of Sweetness, Dry & Defined Delights or Mindful Sips (alcohol-removed). $25 per person for groups of eight or more, booked ahead.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
