Warren Winiarski founded Stag's Leap Wine Cellars on the Silverado Trail in 1970. Just a few years later, at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, its 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon took the top red wine honor ahead of the great Bordeaux, the same tasting in which Chateau Montelena won for white wine.
A bottle of that 1973 S.L.V. is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The winery is now owned by the Antinori family of Tuscany, who became sole owners in 2023.
The estate's caves, finished in 2000, hold one of only about 50 Foucault pendulums in the world, and the FAY Outlook and Visitor Center looks out over the vineyards. The wines to taste are the estate Cabernets: S.L.V., FAY, Cask 23 and ARTEMIS.
$95 for the signature tasting of four current releases. $125 for the 90-minute estate experience with a cave walk, Cask 23 and cheese and charcuterie. $225 for the collector's experience with older vintages.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
