Sire takes its name from an archaic English word for a father or king, and from the breeder's term for a champion's bloodline. The idea, in the winery's words, is to source only "the finest pedigree vineyards" for Cabernet Sauvignon and to wait for the right site. Thomas Buck founded Sire in 2012, and Julien Fayard makes the wine.
Each vintage has been a small, single-site wine. The 2012 came from three blocks of the Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville, 125 cases, and the 2013 and 2014 from Block 22 of the Houyi Vineyard on Pritchard Hill, all aged in new French oak. The current releases at Maison Fayard are the 2023 The Squire Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2023 Chardonnay from Fort Ross-Seaview on the Sonoma Coast.
There is no estate to visit; the Sire website offers only a mailing list. The place to taste and buy Sire is Maison Fayard, Julien's salon at 1408 Second Street in downtown Napa. Its Private Tasting Experience is fully customized, five wines with cheese and charcuterie in a loft room with a dedicated host, so we ask for Sire wines when we reserve. Seated tastings are also poured at the bar or on the sunny patio.
Maison Fayard's tastings: $35 for the Classic Tasting, four current releases at the bar or on the patio; $65 for the Curated Tasting of four reserve wines; $95 for the Private Tasting Experience, five wines with cheese and charcuterie in the private loft, customized to your group. Lengths are not published; we allow about 75 minutes for the private tasting.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

About 15 minutes away. Second-generation Napa winemaker Chris Corley and winegrower Julianna Corley pour current and library wines with light bites in the middle of a working vineyard, the vines close enough to touch. The Private Tasting is $75; we allow about 90 minutes. By reservation only, with very limited seatings; the vineyard location is confirmed with the booking.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, an Italian restaurant serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. Tracey Reichow's Coombsville estate, founded in 1999, where the Syrah and Cabernet vines share the land with the family home and private tastings are few, with club members first. The format and any fee are confirmed when the request is accepted. We allow about an hour.
Back by about 4:20 p.m., a little over six hours after pickup.
About $170 per person for the Maison Fayard private tasting ($95) and Chris Corley ($75), paid directly to each winery, plus any Black Cat fee, confirmed when the request is accepted.
Chris Corley's seatings are very limited and Black Cat hosts only a few private tastings, with club members first, so we confirm both before the day is set. The day runs a little past six hours; extra time is billed by the hour.
