Fred Schweiger bought forested land at the top of Spring Mountain in 1961, paying $250 an acre. He and his wife Sally cleared it and planted vines in 1979, harvested their first Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1984, and released the first wines under the Schweiger label with the 1994 vintage. Their son Andy is the winemaker, and the family still owns and runs the estate.
The 35-acre vineyard sits in the Spring Mountain District, about 2,000 feet above the valley floor, on four types of volcanic soil. The vines are dry-farmed, and the winery makes about 4,200 cases a year. Andy first made Pinot Noir in 2019, and the winery describes it as the highest-elevation Pinot Noir in Napa County.
Visits are by appointment every day. The Estate Tasting pours four current releases, including estate Cabernet Sauvignon, on the terrace, the balcony or in the tasting room, depending on the weather. For a longer visit, the VIP Vineyard Experience walks the vineyard, tours the winery and pairs wines with cheese. The winery advises against rideshare for the drive up the mountain road.
$65 for the Estate Tasting, four current releases in about 75 to 90 minutes (complimentary for club members). $175 for the VIP Vineyard Experience, about 2 to 2.5 hours, booked by inquiry.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 9:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Alila Napa Valley or Harvest Inn. We start 15 minutes early because the winding drive up Spring Mountain Road takes 20 to 25 minutes.
Schweiger sits near the top of Spring Mountain, so the day starts a little early. Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt resort on the north side of St. Helena, is about 20 minutes from the winery, and Harvest Inn, a vineyard resort at the south end of town, is about 25 minutes away. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The Estate Tasting, four current releases with views over the valley, about 75 to 90 minutes ($65).
About 10 minutes away. A family-owned estate founded in 1974, lower down Spring Mountain at 1,700 feet, around a stone winery built in 1904. The estate tasting is $50, about 75 minutes, and the fee applies to a wine purchase of $50 or more. By appointment, daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
About 15 minutes away. Down the mountain to Gott's Roadside on Main Street in St. Helena, a roadside restaurant known for burgers, ahi tacos and a California wine list, open daily from 11 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 8 minutes away. A small winery in the Howell Mountain foothills on the Silverado Trail, with wines made by Thomas Rivers Brown. The Estate Tasting is $85 per person ($95 for groups of 7 to 12) and takes 60 to 90 minutes; we plan for about an hour. By appointment only.
Back by 3:45 p.m., six hours after pickup.
Adds about an hour and a half. A winery on Highway 29 north of St. Helena, about 8 minutes from Mending Wall, built around a 150-year-old stone cellar. Walk-ins are welcome for the Discovery of Napa tasting ($55), and leashed dogs are allowed. Open daily until 5:30 p.m.; we confirm the last tasting time with the winery on the day.
About $200 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.
