Stags Leap District · Napa Valley
The only American building by the Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a gold-domed winery with a living roof in the Stags Leap District, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Carl Doumani bought the historic Stags' Leap Winery in 1971 and spent two decades restoring it. In 1988 he set out to build a smaller organic winery for his favorite grape, Petite Sirah, and the estate vineyard between Stags' Leap Winery and Shafer was planted in 1996. Wine Spectator reported in 2014 that Quixote had been sold to a Chinese-owned company.
The building is the draw. It is the only project in the United States by the Viennese artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser: no right angles above the basement, ceramic tiles, painted columns, uneven floors, a gold-leaf onion dome and a living roof of grass and trees. It took about ten years to build. Robert Smith makes the wines, with Philippe Melka consulting.
Every visit is by appointment, and the menu runs from a quick sampler to a tour of the production area and barrel room. Guests love walking around the building before they sit down, and the seated tastings come with a cheese plate. The estate pours Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap District, plus a campfire s'mores pairing for the playful.
$50 for the Taste of Quixote, a casual non-hosted sampler, about 45 minutes. $80 for the seated Estate Tasting with a cheese plate, about 60 minutes. $100 for the Estate Tour & Tasting, 75 to 90 minutes. $110 for the S'mores & Cabernet Experience, a four-year vertical by a private campfire, 60 to 75 minutes. $150 for the Food & Wine Experience with the winery chef, 75 to 90 minutes.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Only guests over 21, and shared tastings are not allowed. Most tastings take 1 to 6 guests (2 to 8 for the food and s'mores experiences, which need 72 hours' notice); groups of 7 or more call the winery and pay a 20% gratuity.
Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Bardessono or Hotel Villagio.
Both hotels are in Yountville, about 10 minutes from Quixote across the valley on the Yountville Cross Road. The day below runs a little over six hours because the last stop has a fixed 2:30 seating; extra time can be added by the hour.
The seated Estate Tasting with a cheese plate, about an hour ($80). Take a few minutes outside first; the dome and the roof garden are best seen from the courtyard. The Estate Tour & Tasting ($100) adds the barrel room and moves the day back about 20 minutes.
About 12 minutes away. A small Hoffman Lane winery making vineyard-designate Zinfandel and Cabernet since 1985, poured in a casual, intimate room south of Yountville. Tastings are $75 and up; we plan about an hour. By appointment.
About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29, a valley institution open daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 20 minutes away. Three Napa-born brothers pour their wines in The Caves at Soda Canyon, an underground winery with sweeping views of the valley floor. The Signature Tour & Tasting is $85 for about 90 minutes, at a set 2:30 seating. Requests go in a week ahead.
Back in Yountville by about 4:20 p.m., about six hours and twenty minutes after pickup.
About $240 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Buoncristiani seats guests at fixed times (10 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.) and asks for requests a week ahead, so this day runs about six hours and twenty minutes.
