About the Winery
Lupe Maldonado came to California from Atacheo, a small farming village in Michoacán, Mexico, and spent years working in Napa Valley vineyards. While working for Sterling Vineyards, he joined Peter Newton in starting a new winery on Spring Mountain and became vineyard manager at Newton, where he stayed more than 30 years. His son Hugo, a UC Davis graduate in viticulture and enology, succeeded him there in 1999.
Lupe bought 10 acres in Jamieson Canyon, in the cool southern reach of Napa Valley, and planted them densely in dark, gravelly clay. In 2007 the family bought a hillside parcel outside Calistoga and dug their own wine caves, doing much of the work themselves. The wines ferment with native yeasts in French oak and are bottled unfiltered, about 6,000 cases a year under the Maldonado and Farm Worker labels.
Tastings take place in the family's tasting room in a south Napa business park at 901 Enterprise Way, open by appointment on Fridays and Saturdays. Guests choose four wines from the non-reserve list or taste three small-production, reserve-style wines. It is a small winery with a small staff, so the visit is personal, and the family still farms vineyards and runs a vineyard management company.

About 15 minutes away. A family winery known for heritage-vineyard Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, including its Black Chicken Zinfandel. The Valley Vista Experience is a seated tasting on the Back Porch ($50), offered 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. By appointment; online bookings are for up to 4 guests, and larger groups call the winery.

A small Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon producer in the same south Napa building as Maldonado, pouring five wines salon-style in a fountain courtyard or an indoor room. $50, 60 to 75 minutes, including a look at the production area. By reservation only (no walk-ins) at 11, 1 and 3, Friday to Sunday; groups of six or fewer, 21 and over.
