Napa · Napa Valley
Two childhood friends' single-vineyard label, made by former Pahlmeyer winemaker Kale Anderson and poured at Vintner's Collective in a historic landmark building on Main Street in downtown Napa, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.

Mark Smith and Craig Whitney grew up across the street from each other in the Longfellow neighborhood of Maryland, which gave the winery its name, not the poet. After the University of South Carolina and graduate school, both settled in Northern California, and in 2001 they founded Longfellow to make single-vineyard wines true to their varietal heritage.
Winemaker Kale Anderson trained at UC Davis and worked at Colgin Cellars, Terra Valentine and Cliff Lede before becoming director of winemaking at Pahlmeyer, where his 2013 Pièce de Résistance earned 100 points from Robert Parker. Current releases include an Oakville Cabernet from the Renteria 360 Vineyard, a Rhône-style Cuvée Hermitage from McGah Vineyard in Rutherford and a Pope Valley Sauvignon Blanc.
Longfellow has no winery to visit; it pours at Vintner's Collective, a tasting room for family-owned wineries in a historic building on Main Street, where the seated tasting room upstairs was once, by the collective's own telling, Napa's most famous brothel. The bar takes walk-ins, and a private tasting of Longfellow wines can be arranged with the winery.
At Vintner's Collective: $50 for The No. 1, five wines at the bar, about 45 minutes, no reservation needed. $100 for The No. 2, a seated reserve tasting upstairs, by appointment (cheese and charcuterie $25 extra). $250 for The No. 3, with sparkling wine, cheese, charcuterie and chocolates, by appointment. A private Longfellow tasting is priced by the winery when arranged.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Napa River Inn or Archer Hotel Napa.
Napa River Inn, a historic inn in the Napa Mill on the riverfront, is about 5 minutes from Vintner's Collective, and Archer Hotel Napa, a downtown Napa hotel with a rooftop bar, about 5 minutes away. Vintner's Collective opens at 11 a.m., so we pick you up at 10:45. The day below runs about six hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The No. 1 bar tasting at Vintner's Collective, $50, about 45 minutes; ask for Longfellow wines in your flight. The seated No. 2 ($100) or a private Longfellow tasting takes longer and moves the day back.
About 15 minutes away. Lunch at Boon Fly Café in Carneros, which serves its daytime menu every day until 4 p.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 20 minutes away. A boutique family winery whose Yountville Tasting Home sits on a private piazza, known for playful pairings such as five wines with artisanal potato chips. The Potato Chip Extravaganza is $65 for about 75 minutes. Open daily, with reservations from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; parties up to 6.
About 8 minutes away. A hillside estate in the Yountville AVA where the visit takes in deep underground caves and a castle-style tasting room with vaulted ceilings of 18th-century brick. The Classic Experience of five or more wines is $175; we allow about 90 minutes. By appointment, Tuesday to Saturday.
Back by about 4:45 p.m., six hours after pickup.
About $290 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Blankiet Estate hosts Tuesday to Saturday, so this plan suits those days. Lunch comes early because Vintner's Collective opens at 11 a.m. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
