Winemaker Ehren Jordan founded Failla (pronounced FAY-la) and released its first vintage in 1998, under the name Failla-Jordan. That same year he planted the first blocks of an estate vineyard in Cazadero, on the far Sonoma Coast. Jordan still owns the winery and makes the wines. Before Failla, he worked for Jean-Luc Colombo in Cornas, where Syrah was the first grape he farmed and fermented.
Failla is about cool climates. The estate vineyard sits at 1,000 to 1,400 feet in the Fort Ross-Seaview appellation, about 2.5 miles from the Pacific, with 11 acres of organically dry-farmed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. The rest of the lineup is single-vineyard wine from growers such as Hirsch, Peay, Keefer Ranch and Hudson, plus old-vine Chardonnay from the Haynes Vineyard in Coombsville.
The Napa Valley home is on the Silverado Trail north of St. Helena, next door to Rombauer. Visits are by reservation, and most tastings pour five single-vineyard wines over about an hour. You can sit in the Lodge, at a table outside when the weather allows, or among the barrels in the winery's cave with an educator who talks about the vineyards and the winemaking.
$65 for the Lodge Tasting (seated, about an hour) or the Outdoor Tasting (weather permitting). $90 for the Cave Tasting, five wines among the barrels, about an hour. One fee is waived per 4 bottles purchased.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
