Kanpai is Japanese for cheers, and to founders Peter Chiang and Azumi Kubo it means family and togetherness. For years their vineyard sold grapes to other wineries; after the 2017 Napa Valley fires they started their own label, and they still give proceeds from their Hi No Tori rosé to wildfire relief each year.
The vineyard is Meadowbrook Farm, at the mouth of the Dry Creek canyon in the Oak Knoll District, built in the early 1900s by silent film actress Lenore Stearns. For more than 30 years it has supplied Cabernet to wineries such as Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Joseph Phelps and Opus One. It is farmed organically, with sheep grazing the cover crops.
The winemaker is Steve Matthiasson, known for balanced, food-friendly wines, and Kanpai makes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and rosé alongside Cabernet. Peter is a trained chef, so food is part of the story. Guests taste at Vintner's Collective, downtown Napa's oldest multi-winery tasting room, in an 1875 stone building.
At Vintner's Collective: $50 for a five-wine bar tasting, about 45 minutes, no reservation needed, and $100 for a seated reserve tasting upstairs, by appointment.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Good to Know
There is no estate visit; Meadowbrook Farm is the family's home. The wines Vintner's Collective pours change, so we ask for Kanpai when we book. Parties of 7 or more book Vintner's Collective by phone.
Pickup at 10:45 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Andaz Napa or Archer Hotel Napa. Vintner's Collective opens at 11 a.m.
Both hotels are in downtown Napa, a few minutes from Vintner's Collective. We start at 10:45 because the tasting room opens at 11. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A tasting at Vintner's Collective: the bar tasting ($50) or the seated reserve tasting upstairs ($100), with Kanpai requested when we book. We allow about an hour and 15 minutes.
About 10 minutes away. A fourth-generation family winery on Big Ranch Road, acclaimed for old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah from historic Napa Valley vineyards. The Valley Vista Experience is a seated tasting on the Back Porch with a view across the valley ($50), offered daily 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; we allow about 75 minutes. By appointment.
About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, a Napa Valley favorite for more than 40 years, open daily for lunch. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
Back by 3:15 p.m. With the time left on a six-hour tour, we can add a stop in Yountville or Oak Knoll on request.
About $100 to $150 per person in tasting fees for the two wineries, paid directly to each winery.
This is a shorter day with two winery stops, since Kanpai is poured downtown rather than at the vineyard. Ask and we will add a third winery within the six hours.
Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
