David and Kathleen Grieve bought a property in Lovall Valley in 2002 to put down roots in wine country. Next door was a newly planted Sauvignon Blanc vineyard where they took their daily walks, and when it came up for sale two years later, they bought it. Today the family farms a 70-acre estate and makes two labels, Grieve Family Estate and Double Eagle, named for David Grieve's love of golf.
Lovall Valley is a hilltop bowl on the border of the Napa and Sonoma valleys, inside the Napa Valley AVA, where fog from San Pablo Bay settles in from evening until midday; the winery calls it one of Napa's coolest growing regions. The vineyard is farmed organically. Philippe Melka, whose career includes Haut-Brion, Petrus and Dominus, has been head winemaker since 2018, with Maayan Koschitzky.
The estate itself is not open to the public. Tastings are held upstairs at Grove 45, a family olive oil boutique on the Silverado Trail just outside downtown Calistoga, by appointment. Guests start with the Grieve Estate and Double Eagle Sauvignon Blancs side by side and finish with the Double Eagle red blend. It is a quiet, small stop, and Grove 45 also hosts olive oil tastings.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation. The winery's own site does not publish a fee; the Napa Valley Vintners listing gives $50 per person, waived with a wine purchase.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

About $320 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery (Grieve's fee to be verified upon reservation).
Grieve's tastings are by appointment for mailing list members on days the winery confirms (the Napa Valley Vintners listing says Thursday and Friday), and Sam's Social Club serves lunch on weekdays, so we plan this day for a Thursday or Friday. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
