About the Winery

Dick and Ann Grace founded Grace Family Vineyards in April 1976, planting their St. Helena vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings from the Bosché Vineyard in Rutherford. The first harvest, in 1978, was picked by family and friends and driven to Caymus in the back of a station wagon, where Charlie Wagner told Dick it was "damned fine fruit." It became one of Napa Valley's first vineyard-designated wines.

Grace Family Cabernet became one of the valley's first cult wines, yet stayed a small family affair for forty years. In 2019 the Graces passed the estate to the Green family, who run it as a family-owned winery today, and Dick and Ann still live on the property. The estate vineyard, in the St. Helena AVA, is under three acres in two blocks 300 feet apart, farmed with cover crops, owl boxes and an insectary.

The winery sits steps from the vines, and the wines are made with native yeast and no fining or filtration. Grace Family is not open to the public, but private appointments can be requested ahead, with priority for longtime clients and collectors. We send the request for you and build the day once the estate confirms a time. Guests who get in see one of the smallest and best-known vineyards in Napa Valley up close.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley. Grace Family sets appointment times on request, so the start time may move once the winery confirms.

10:00 · Pickup at Meadowood or Alila Napa Valley

Both are in St. Helena, about 10 minutes from the estate: Meadowood, the resort in its own wooded valley off the Silverado Trail, and Alila Napa Valley, on the hillside at the north end of town. If Grace Family offers another time, we build the day around it. The day below runs about six and a quarter hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:15 · Grace Family Vineyards

A private visit by appointment at the vineyard and the small winery beside it. The winery does not publish a length or fee, so we allow about an hour and a quarter and confirm the details when the appointment is accepted.

11:45 · Crocker & Starr

About 10 minutes away. Charlie Crocker and Pam Starr's estate around the 1870s Dowdell stone winery at the south edge of St. Helena. The visit starts with a glass of sparkling wine and a walk into the vineyard, then a seated tasting under the Garden Arbor. The Estate Vineyard Experience is $95, about 75 minutes, for groups of up to 6. By reservation.

1:15 · Lunch at Rutherford Grill

About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Rutherford Grill at the Rutherford crossroads, a sit-down grill open daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:35 · Vineyard 29

About 15 minutes away. A St. Helena estate north of town whose first Cabernet vines, planted in 1989, came from Grace Family cuttings. The Signature Experience opens with a CRU wine, tours the winery and caves, then pours current releases with a seasonal, locally sourced spread. $110, about 90 minutes, by appointment.

4:05 · Back to your hotel

Back in St. Helena by about 4:20 p.m.

About $205 per person in tasting fees for Crocker & Starr and Vineyard 29, plus Grace Family's fee, which is confirmed with the appointment; each paid directly to the winery.

Grace Family hosts only by private appointment, and its longtime clients come first, so the day is set once the winery confirms a time. As planned it runs about six and a quarter hours.
