About the Winery

After the family sold Robert Mondavi Winery in 2004, Tim Mondavi and his sister Marcia Mondavi Borger founded Continuum with their families in 2005. Tim joined his father's winery in 1974, became chief winemaker and developed the wine and vineyards for Opus One. The first three Continuum vintages came mostly from To-Kalon; in 2008 and 2009 the family bought contiguous parcels on Pritchard Hill, and the estate winery was finished in 2013.

The family calls the site Sage Mountain Vineyard. The vines grow at 1,325 to 1,600 feet, above the fog line, on red, rocky volcanic soils, with views across the valley to the San Francisco Bay, and only 71 of the estate's 173 acres are planted. Continuum is a single wine blended from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot, labeled Napa Valley AVA, and the 2023 is Tim Mondavi's 50th vintage as the family's winemaker.

Continuum welcomes its mailing list collectors and those looking to start collecting, daily by prior arrangement. The private 90-minute visit explores the vineyard, walks through the Howard Backen winery, whose roof harvests the rain used for winemaking, and ends with a guided tasting of current wines. Chiara Mondavi's 12-foot painting of an old Cabernet Franc vine, the image on the label, hangs in the estate house.

About 8 minutes away. A historic Mayacamas foothill estate owned by the family behind Château Smith Haut Lafitte, where a hosted tour of the gravity-flow winery and horseshoe cellar ends with a tasting of the estate's three wines. About $350 per person in tasting fees for Lithology and Cathiard, paid directly to each winery, plus Continuum's fee, confirmed when the estate books your visit.

Cathiard confirms each visit request, so give us as much notice as you can; if it cannot host on your date, we swap in another St. Helena estate of the same standing.
