About the Winery
Clif Family grew out of the same outdoor, organic spirit as Clif Bar. In 2004 the family started the Clif Family Farm, planting fruit trees and milling olives from 100-year-old trees, and the St. Helena tasting room followed in 2011. Kit Crawford is co-owner and co-founder.
Today the family farms 90 acres of estate vineyards on Howell Mountain and in the Oak Knoll District, CCOF certified organic and Napa Green certified, with nine grape varieties. Winemaker Laura Barrett makes the wines and Executive Chef Magnus Young cooks with produce from the organic farm. Clif Family says it was the first winery to run a food truck, the Bruschetteria, which opened three years after the tasting room.
This is a food-and-wine stop more than a classic tasting. At the Main Street tasting room every flight comes paired with seasonal bites, and the patio is an easy place to linger. For something more private, the Enoteca salon looks out over vineyards to the Mayacamas and hosts wine and cheese, a farm-to-brunch pairing and a full farm-to-table lunch. Tastings are free on Tuesdays.
Tasting Fees
At the Main Street tasting room, $50 each for the Seasonal, Rise & Wine and Cab Drop tastings, all paired with bites (complimentary on Tuesdays). At the Enoteca, $95 for Vino e Formaggio, $125 for the Farm to Brunch Tasting and $195 for the Root & Vine farm-to-table lunch.

The Main Street tasting room is open Thursday to Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday until 7 p.m.; tastings are by reservation, and walk-ins are welcome for wine by the glass. The Enoteca, at 1334 Vidovich Lane, is open daily by appointment, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Good to Know
Tastings require reservations, and same-day appointments depend on availability. A vegan pairing menu or a mocktail flight can be substituted on request. The Bruschetteria food truck serves Wednesday 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Thursday to Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tastings are complimentary on Tuesdays by reservation.

Meadowood, in its own wooded valley east of St. Helena, is about 8 minutes from Main Street, and Auberge du Soleil, on the hillside above Rutherford, about 12. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

The Seasonal Wine Tasting with bites from the culinary team ($50); the winery does not list a length, so we plan about an hour. At the Enoteca, Vino e Formaggio ($95) is a quieter alternative.
11:35 · Arkenstone Estate
About 20 minutes away, up Howell Mountain. A family estate in Angwin where the visit tours the winery and vineyard before a tasting of single-vineyard Cabernets, the Estate Blanc and the Estate Red, opened just for your group. The Arkenstone Experience is $150, about 90 minutes, paid when booked.

About 20 minutes away, back down the mountain. Lunch at The Charter Oak in St. Helena, a sit-down restaurant open daily from 11:30 a.m. (11 a.m. on weekends). Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

About 8 minutes away. A historic estate north of St. Helena set in a redwood grove, with wines by winemaker and partner Jean Hoefliger. The Estate Tasting starts with a glass of the newest white, tours the estate, then pours current-release reds at a private table. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment; AXR does not publish its fees, so the cost is confirmed when we book. We plan about an hour.
