Castello di Amorosa rises from the hillside off Highway 29, three miles south of Calistoga. Dario Sattui, a fourth-generation winemaker whose great-grandfather founded the family winery in 1885, bought the 171-acre property in 1993. Colonel William Nash had planted one of California's first vineyards here in 1846.
Construction began in 1994 and took 15 years. The castle opened in 2007 with 107 rooms on eight levels, four of them underground, built from more than 8,000 tons of hand-chiseled stone and nearly a million antique European bricks. There is a moat and drawbridge, five towers, a chapel, an armory and, on the guided tour, a torture chamber.
The wines are Italian in spirit and sold only at the castle and to members, led by the Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the La Castellana Super Tuscan blend. For first-time visitors to Napa Valley, it is one of the most memorable stops in the valley.
$60 for the seated reserve tasting with a self-guided walk through two levels, about 75 minutes. $75 for the guided tour and tasting, about two hours, and $115 for the guided tour with cheese and charcuterie. A $4.95 online booking fee applies.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
