About the Winery

Sheldon "Hack" Wilson and his wife Stella founded Chimney Rock on the site of the Chimney Rock Golf Course. In 1981 they turned half of the 18 holes into vineyard, and the rest was later planted to vines too. The first estate vintage was 1984.

The winery's white Cape Dutch-style buildings, with a large frieze of Ganymede, are a landmark on the Silverado Trail. The Terlato family became partners in 2000 and took full ownership in 2004, and Elizabeth Vianna is the winemaker.

Chimney Rock is all about estate-grown Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon, from 119 acres in 28 blocks. Tastings are gracious and welcoming, including to families and dogs.

Tasting Fees

$75 for Taste of Terroir, about 90 minutes, daily. $125 for the Single Vineyard Tasting, Thursday to Sunday, and $195 for the two-hour Vineyard Odyssey Tour & Tasting, Thursday to Saturday.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. This day works Thursday to Monday, when Clos du Val is open. Baldacci does not admit guests under 21, so families get a different second stop.
