About the Winery

Bluford Wines belongs to proprietor Jeff Parady, the seventh generation of his family in Napa Valley. The family traces its roots to the early days of the California wine and brandy industry: relatives include Lafayette Stice, a winemaker at Inglenook, and Henry Harrison Harris, a winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard. The label is named for Bluford Stice, who left Napa Valley to mine gold in Oregon in the early 1860s.

Wines, mines, cars and history are Jeff's passions, as the winery puts it. His property near Aetna Springs in Pope Valley includes the Washington Mine, next to the Phoenix Mine, Napa County's first quicksilver mine, and the family bought the Pope Valley Repair & Towing shop, which dates from 1915, in 2015. His parents' vineyard above Pope Valley was first planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in 1998, and the property holds the ruins of the 1870s Haug Winery.

The lineup is short: Bluford Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 33 months in French oak; Charlotte Katherine Chardonnay, a Chablis-style white from Knights Valley; and Ore Cart Cabernet Sauvignon from 50-year-old hillside vines. Tastings are by request through the winery, which calls to confirm and gives the address. We confirm current details when we book.

$100 per person for the Bluford Wine Napa Valley Tasting, charged once the winery confirms the booking. We confirm the current price when we book.

9:50 · Pickup at Meadowood or Hotel St. Helena

Both hotels are in St. Helena. Pope Valley is about 30 minutes away, over the hills from St. Helena, so the day is planned around two wineries and lunch back in St. Helena. Extra time can be added by the hour.

10:20 · Bluford Wines

The Bluford Wine Napa Valley Tasting ($100 per person), by request; the winery gives the address when it confirms. The length is not published, so we plan on about 90 minutes.

12:00 · Pope Valley Winery

About 10 minutes away, depending on the tasting address. A family-run estate from 1897 on the quiet far side of Howell Mountain. The Vineyard View Experience is $35, waived with the purchase of two bottles per guest; plan on about 60 minutes. By reservation.

1:30 · Lunch at The Charter Oak

About 30 minutes away. Lunch in St. Helena at The Charter Oak, Christopher and Martina Kostow's family-style New American restaurant. We confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:45 · Back to your hotel

About 10 minutes back, by about 2:55 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

About $135 per person in tasting fees for the two wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Bluford confirms each requested date and time by phone, so we request early and build the day around the confirmed slot. Pope Valley Winery hosts mainly Friday to Monday, with other days by request; on other days we arrange it ahead or add a St. Helena winery after lunch.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
