About the Winery

John Stewart came from Ireland and founded Stewart Ranch in Carneros on October 5, 1903, buying 300 acres. For decades it was a Jersey dairy. Today his descendant Ailene runs the ranch with her husband, Paul Tarap, as the family's fifth generation, and the family says it has been farming in Napa Valley for more than 120 years.

The ranch raises Belted Galloway cattle, the black-and-white "Oreo cows" in its name, and calls itself the oldest continuous breeder of Belted Galloways in California. There are also champion Quarter Horses and miniature horses. When the family's vineyard lease ended and Napa County passed a micro-winery ordinance in 2022, they began making their own wine, including Albariño and Merlot.

Belted Vines sells its wines through its online shop and wine club. The ranch is not open to visitors yet: the family is converting the old dairy barn into a tasting room, with views of old-school Carneros countryside and the animals. Until it opens, the day below takes you to three nearby estates that do welcome guests.
