About the Winery

Fiona and Hal Barnett bought a 40-acre property atop Spring Mountain in 1983. The winery says it held nothing but trees, rocks, shrubs and dozens of rattlesnakes. They planted it by hand, made their first harvest in 1989 (232 cases of Spring Mountain Cabernet), moved to the property full time in 1991 and raised three daughters there. The Barnetts still own it today.

The vineyard climbs to about 2,050 feet at Rattlesnake Hill, its highest block, and the estate is known above all for mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Barnett also makes Cabernet Franc and Merlot from the Spring Mountain District, plus small lots of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from single vineyards. The estate is farmed organically, is powered in part by solar energy and is Napa Green certified. David Tate has made the wines since the 2007 vintage.

Visits are small and personal. A host walks you through a flight of five current-release wines, with talk of the family's history, the mountain terroir and how the wines are made, and the tasting ends with the view across Napa Valley from nearly 2,000 feet. Appointments run at 10 a.m., noon and 3 p.m., so every visit is planned ahead.

Tasting Fees

$125 for the Tasting Experience, a guided flight of five current-release wines, about 90 minutes. $175 for the Library Tasting, three library wines alongside current releases, Thursday to Saturday at 10 a.m.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
