About the Winery

Brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer founded the winery in 1876 on Main Street at the north end of St. Helena. It is known as the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley, having kept making wine through Prohibition, and in 1934 it was the first California winery to offer public tours.

The estate's centerpiece is the Rhine House, built in 1883 and 1884 for Frederick Beringer and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Behind it, caves dug by hand into the hillside still hold barrels of wine.

Beringer is best known for its Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, first made in 1977; the 1986 vintage was Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year. Tastings range from a short cave tour to seated flights on the Rhine House veranda, which makes it an easy first stop for any group.

Tasting Fees

$35 for the 30-minute Legacy Cave Tour or the hour-long Discover Beringer Outdoor tasting. $65 for the Veranda Experience or Knights Valley Expression, about 75 minutes. $95 for the Estate Tour & Tasting through the caves, and $150 for the Collectors' Experience of library wines.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
