About the Winery

Jim Barbour grew up on his family's ranch in Rutherford and, after UC Davis, worked for viticulturist Laurie Wood, developing hillside vineyards few others would take on, including many on Spring Mountain. He started Barbour Vineyards in 1990 and has planted and managed vineyards such as Hundred Acre, Grace Family, Checkerboard, Blankiet, Harbison Estate and Keever.

In 1992 he planted his own vineyard on the west side of the valley, just south of the town of St. Helena, with Cabernet clone 7 budwood from Grace Family. The gravelly, loamy vineyard is dry-farmed and yields one to two tons an acre. The first vintage, 1995, was 50 cases, made at Grace Family. Celia Welch now makes about 300 cases a year; the 2023 came to 329 cases.

Barbour Cabernet Sauvignon is sold through the winery's mailing list, and Napa Valley Vintners lists the winery as not open to the public, so it does not receive visitors. The day below starts at Jean Hoefliger's single-vineyard salon in St. Helena, then pours a vineyard manager's own label at Brasswood and ends at a historic estate on Diamond Mountain.
