Gus Kalaris, founder and owner of the wine distribution and import company Constantine Wines since 1986, started Axios in 1999. Axios means worthy in Greek, a nod to his heritage; he was born in Washington, D.C., and is fluent in Greek. The Cabernet is a collaboration with winemaker Bob Egelhoff, and the winery notes it was served at a reception hosted by President Bush at the White House in March 2002.
Axios aims for a Bordeaux-influenced Cabernet Sauvignon that shows its Napa Valley origin, and its success led to more labels: Worthy, Truth, Telios and Kalaris. In 2013 Kalaris bought a home surrounded by more than 10 acres of vineyards in Calistoga, the source of most Kalaris wines, with the goal of a Pomerol-style red from the estate. Manny Gomes manages the vineyard and estate.
The 2021 Axios Cabernet Sauvignon is the current release, alongside library vintages back to 2000 and large formats, all sold on the winery's website. Axios publishes no tasting room or visiting program, so it does not receive visitors. Since the family estate is in Calistoga, the day below stays at the top of the valley, from Diamond Mountain to the Blueline estate.
Axios does not offer tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
