About the Winery

Vokel Cellars began with a handshake in November 2015 in the lobby bar of the St. Paul Hotel in Minnesota, between Beth and Gregg Cummings and winemaker Dana Von Sternberg, a co-owner, Minnesota Monthly reported. The winery works out of a production facility on Mill Street in Healdsburg and makes about 1,500 cases a year.

The guiding idea, as the winery puts it: 'To craft a truly fine wine, you must let the vineyard speak for itself.' The range includes single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Perezchica, Eastside Ranch and Heintz vineyards and a Russian River Valley bottling, Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon from the Luther, Micheli and Vale vineyards, Dry Creek Valley Malbec and Merlot, and Abouriou, a rare red grape, from McCormick.

Vokel sells only by word of mouth, never on grocery store shelves, and does not run a public tasting room. Instead the team offers private tastings, production facility visits and vineyard walks when they are in town, so it is best to ask ahead. We email them for you and confirm the time when booking.

10:15 · Vokel Cellars

The first stop. A private tasting at the production facility; we confirm the time and fee when booking.

11:30 · Optima Winery

About 15 minutes away. Winemaker Mike Duffy's family winery, best known for Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley and Knights Valley; he worked alongside André Tchelistcheff at Field Stone before devoting himself to Optima. Tastings of five small-lot wines, chosen around what you like, are $25, and a vineyard walk with a tasting is $50. Walk-ins welcome, Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; dogs welcome.

12:45 · Lunch at Diavola

2:25 · Simoncini Vineyards

About 30 minutes away. Ken Simoncini's small family winery on West Dry Creek Road, where guests walk through the kitchen into a wine cave he spent six years building, with chandeliers, a window onto the rock wall and redwood doors that open toward the creek. The Wine Tasting & Cave Tour of six wines is $55; the five-course Wine and Food Experience is $185, one seating a day between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. By appointment only; no pets, infants or guests under 21.

3:25 · Back to your hotel

Back in Healdsburg by 3:45 p.m., within six hours of pickup.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. Optima is closed Monday and Simoncini is by appointment, so this day works Tuesday to Sunday; we confirm Vokel and Simoncini when we book.

About $80 per person at Optima and Simoncini, paid directly to each winery; Vokel's tasting fee is to be verified upon reservation.
