Michael Cruse's single-vineyard California sparkling wine, made in Petaluma and sold by mailing list, visited by private request, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
Michael Cruse studied molecular biology at UC Berkeley and worked in research labs before turning to wine, training in winery labs and then opening a custom crush winery in Petaluma. He and friends began trying to make sparkling wine in 2008. After two unsuccessful backyard vintages, he approached grower Charlie Heintz around 2010 for fruit from the Heintz Vineyard.
Ultramarine makes single-vineyard, single-vintage sparkling wine by hand from top sites along the California coast. The first commercial release, in 2014, was the 2010 vintage from Heintz Vineyard, which remains its core wine, and later bottlings have come from Hirsch, Michael Mara and Keefer Ranch. Cruse also makes still and sparkling wines under his Cruse Wine Co. label at the same Petaluma winery.
Ultramarine has no public tasting room and sells its wines through a mailing list, and the wine writer Alder Yarrow of Vinography has called it California's first cult sparkling wine. A visit to the winery is by private request only; we arrange it on your behalf when the winery can host.
Ultramarine does not publish a tasting fee or visitor program.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
