About the Winery

Tomaq Wines is a small label started by a former tech-industry professional whose interest in wine began as a Cal Poly student in the 1980s and grew while selling Burgundy, German and South African wines in the early 1990s. The chance came when a winemaker neighbor was able to buy grapes from the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, and the two were soon picking by headlamp at 5 a.m.

The first vintage was a Pinot Noir from King Ridge, high above the Sonoma Coast, made under the guidance of winemaker Ashley Herzberg in a subtle, medium-bodied style the founder compares to the Savigny-les-Beaune the founder once sold. Tomaq wines come from small single vineyards chosen to show their terroir. The current list includes a 2019 Fort Ross-Seaview Pinot Noir ($48) and a 2020 Pinot Noir rose. The name comes from the Kashaya word for fog; the Kashaya people lived in the Fort Ross-Seaview area long before the Russians and the Gold Rush.

Tomaq sells online and through a wine club, with no tasting room or appointments, so it does not receive visitors. The day below is a Pinot Noir day in the Russian River Valley, including a flight of Fort Ross-Seaview Pinot at Martinelli.

Tasting Fees

Tomaq does not offer tastings.

The day below visits Gary Farrell ($55), Martinelli ($75 for the Pinot Noir Flight) and Hartford ($60), about $190 per person in tasting fees.

Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
