The Mauritson family has grown grapes in Dry Creek Valley since 1868. Their ancestor S.P. Hallengren planted vines in the Rockpile hills in 1884 and shipped wine to Sweden. In the early 1960s the Army Corps of Engineers bought most of the family's 4,000-acre Rockpile ranch to build Lake Sonoma, and for about 30 years the remaining land was grazed by sheep.
Clay Mauritson came home in the mid-1990s to turn the family's farming into winemaking, and released the first Mauritson Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel in 1998. The family then replanted 34 acres at Rockpile in eight separate blocks on the steep ridge above the lake, and also farms in Dry Creek and Alexander Valley.
Rockpile is a remote ridge-top appellation with no tasting rooms of its own, so Mauritson pours its single-vineyard Rockpile wines at its winery on Dry Creek Road, opened in 2004. Seated tastings are in the tasting room overlooking the vineyards or down in the cellar.
$30 per person for the seated Signature Tasting of new releases, about 90 minutes. Complimentary for wine club members.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
