Jess Jackson bought an 80-acre pear and walnut orchard in Lake County in 1974 and replanted it to Chardonnay. He and his family founded Kendall-Jackson in 1982 to make a premium but affordable California wine, and the first Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay won the first Platinum Award given to an American Chardonnay at the American Wine Competition. Jess Jackson died in 2011, and the winery remains family-owned; his wife, Barbara Banke, was Wine Enthusiast's 2013 Wine Person of the Year, the first woman to receive the award.
Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay became the best-selling Chardonnay in America in 1992, by the winery's count of retail dollar share. Randy Ullom has been head winemaker since 1997, the year the winery launched Stature, its top collection of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from mountain vineyards. The family owns vineyards across California's top growing regions, and Kendall-Jackson is the only American winery with a share in a French stave mill, bought in 1991.
The Wine Estate & Gardens opened in 1996 on Fulton Road in Santa Rosa, with a tasting room set within one of the estate vineyards, a culinary garden, a sensory garden and an educational vineyard. Tastings run from a casual three-wine flight to seated chef's pairings from the kitchen led by Executive Chef Tracey Shepos Cenami, and from May through October a guided garden tour ends with a tasting.
$20 for the Taste of K-J, a casual flight of three wines. $35 for the guided Estate Wine Tasting of Jackson Estate wines. $65 for the 90-minute Guided Culinary Garden Tour + Tasting, May to October at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. $75 for Chef's Small Plates & Pairing, $95 for the 60-minute Stature Collection Tasting and $125 for the Chef's Five-Course Menu & Pairing.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
