Brian and Sheree Thornsberry fell for Northern California wine on a 2010 visit to Sonoma and Napa, and over the next decade they tasted their way through France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Croatia and South Africa before moving from St. Louis to California, first part-time to Calistoga, then to Napa and finally to Santa Rosa. The idea for a winery came over a long dinner in 2018 with their oldest son, who told them they were "above average" and could do anything they set their minds to. The name means countless, beyond the numbers: the part of a great wine that no measurement explains.
Innumero has no estate of its own. Winemaker Ashley Herzberg, who learned Pinot Noir at Owl Ridge under Merry Edwards and Greg La Follette and later was assistant winemaker at Mauritson, makes small lots of single-vineyard, single-clone wines from growers' sites such as Bootlegger's Hill and Little Boot in the Green Valley, Lancel Creek above Occidental, Ellen Lane near Forestville and Kick Ranch in the Fountaingrove District. The wines are made at Grand Cru Custom Crush in Windsor, a cooperative winery of about 25,000 cases a year, and released three times a year to the allocation list.
The visits are personal: Brian and Sheree host every one. The Grand Cru Private Tasting takes guests through the production facility for barrel samples and current releases; the Epicurean Tasting & Lunch is a small farm-to-table meal at Pour Le Goût Farm in Forestville, cooked in an open-air, wood-fired kitchen by chefs Scott Lietzke and Martin Meeker; and the VIP Tasting at Appellation Healdsburg pairs current and library wines with cheeses and charcuterie at chef Charlie Palmer's hotel.
$50 for the Grand Cru Private Tasting at the Windsor winery, about 90 minutes. $80 for the VIP Tasting at Appellation Healdsburg with cheeses and charcuterie, about 90 minutes. $150 for the Epicurean Tasting & Lunch at Pour Le Goût Farm, 2 to 2.5 hours.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

H2hotel, a green-roofed hotel just off the Healdsburg plaza, is about 15 minutes from the Grand Cru winery in Windsor where Innumero pours, and Hotel Healdsburg, on the town plaza, about 20. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
The Grand Cru Private Tasting with Brian and Sheree Thornsberry, a tour of the production facility with barrel samples and current releases ($50), about 90 minutes.
About 20 minutes away. The Gamba family has farmed this Woolsey Road vineyard since 1947; it was planted in 1900, is organically farmed and gets no water but the rain, and the family launched its own label in 2000, best known for old-vine Zinfandel. Every appointment is privately hosted, with a selection of Gamba and Etrusca wines; the fee is confirmed when we book. By appointment only.

About 15 minutes away. GrapeSeed pours small-lot wines by winemaker Matt Smith, among them his Sassoferrato Italian varieties, at 20 seats inside the Paul Mahder Gallery, a double Quonset hut on Healdsburg Avenue with 30-foot ceilings and more than 8,000 square feet of art. Seated flights run from $10 to $100. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Tuesday; we book ahead.
Back in Healdsburg by 3:55 p.m., within six hours of pickup.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. GrapeSeed closes on Tuesday, so this day works any other day; Innumero confirms requests within 24 hours, and Gamba is by appointment, so we book both first.
About $60 to $150 per person in tasting fees for Innumero and GrapeSeed, paid directly to each winery; the Gamba tasting fee is to be verified upon reservation.
