About the Winery

The Ehret family has cared for its 1,800-acre estate at the base of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley for three generations. Werner Ehret started the Bavarian Lion legacy in 1976, raising Bavarian Simmental cattle after moving to the property. In 1996 his son Pierre planted Bordeaux varieties, and for years the family sold the grapes to well-known Napa and Sonoma wineries.

In 2005 the family began keeping its best fruit for its own label. Winemaker Erin Green makes about 1,500 cases a year, all estate grown at Bavarian Lion Vineyards: Cabernet Sauvignon, including Bella's Cabernet, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and a Hillside Reserve red. The estate is certified sustainable, and the land also holds a truffle orchard, olive groves, an apiary and the cattle ranch.

Guests taste at the family's tasting room on Healdsburg Avenue, a short walk from the plaza. Each tasting is guided by a member of the Ehret family, who shares the wines along with the family's history and the vineyards behind every bottle. We confirm current details when we book.

Tasting Fees

$40 per person for the Ehret Family Winery Tasting Flight, a guided tasting of the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc, 2023 Merlot, 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2023 Bella's Cabernet. We confirm the current price when we book.

Tasting fees as of October 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

A Suggested Six-Hour Day

Pickup at 11 a.m. from a hotel on the Healdsburg plaza such as Hotel Healdsburg or h2hotel. The Ehret tasting room is a few minutes away.

11:00 · Pickup at Hotel Healdsburg or h2hotel

Both hotels are on the Healdsburg plaza, a few minutes from every stop today. Pickup is at 11 because the Ehret tasting room opens at noon, and the whole day stays in downtown Healdsburg, so there is more time to taste and less time in the car. Extra time can be added by the hour.

11:10 · Rockpile Vineyards

About 3 minutes away. Wines from a mountaintop ranch above Lake Sonoma, poured on Healdsburg Avenue. The Heritage flight of four wines, usually one Bordeaux-style red and three single-vineyard Zinfandels, is $25, waived with a $45 wine purchase per person; reservations are required to guarantee a spot.

12:20 · Ehret Family Winery

About 3 minutes away. The Ehret Family Winery Tasting Flight ($40 per person), guided by a member of the family: Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and two Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. Plan on about an hour; we book it ahead.

1:30 · Lunch at Healdsburg Bar & Grill

About 3 minutes away. Lunch at Healdsburg Bar & Grill on Healdsburg Avenue, known for its fried chicken and applewood-pit barbecue, with local wines and brews. We confirm hours when we book. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:45 · Siduri Wines

About 2 minutes away. A downtown Healdsburg lounge with deep sofas, a vinyl collection and Pinot Noir from Oregon to Santa Barbara. Intro to Siduri, three Pinot Noirs, is $20, and the North-to-South Tasting of six Pinot Noirs is $30. Walk-ins welcome, and there is room to settle in for an hour or more.

4:45 · Back to your hotel

Back by 5:00 p.m., six hours after pickup.

The Ehret tasting room is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and Siduri is also closed those days, so the day above runs Thursday to Monday. Ehret opens at noon; Rockpile is open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last seating at 4, and Siduri is open Monday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

About $85 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
