Jerry Taylor was fifth-generation Napa Valley, raised in Monticello, a town that no longer exists. He and Pat settled in Yountville in the 1950s, bought this hillside in 1976 and planted ten acres of vines by hand in 1980, in what became the Stags Leap District. In 2002 their daughter Sandy Taylor and her husband Phil Carlson founded the label.
The estate is still farmed and run by the family who lives there, three generations on. The wines are made in small quantities: Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, the Cumulus red, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Forbes called the Stags Leap Cabernet stunning, and Food & Wine named Cumulus one of 25 splurge-worthy California reds.
You will not find the wines on a shelf. They are sold through membership, from an annual case of the top Cabernets to red-and-white shipments three times a year. Private tastings are offered Monday through Friday by appointment for members and member referrals only, so the estate is not open to the public. The day below visits three nearby estates that do host.
Taylor Family Vineyards does not offer public tastings.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Both hotels are in Yountville, about 12 minutes from the first stop. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
About 12 minutes away. John Shafer's 1972 estate in the Stags Leap District, home of Hillside Select. The Collectors Experience pours five current releases, including Hillside Select, for $140, about 90 minutes. By appointment, Tuesday to Saturday.
About 12 minutes away. A small Hoffman Lane winery making vineyard-designate Zinfandel and Cabernet since 1985, poured in a casual, intimate room south of Yountville. Tastings are $75 and up; we plan about an hour. By appointment.
About 8 minutes away. A relaxed Yountville spot with a sushi bar and a patio, open for lunch daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 10 minutes away. A historic Oakville stone winery with a panoramic terrace view across the valley. An Introduction to Cardinale pours four current releases with seasonal bites for $125; we plan about 75 minutes. By appointment.
Back in Yountville by about 4:00 p.m., six hours after pickup.
About $340 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Shafer is open Tuesday to Saturday, so this day works on those days.
