Tony and Herta (HB) Peju bought 30 acres in Napa Valley's Rutherford district in 1983, and the first PEJU wine, a 1983 Cabernet Sauvignon, was released in 1985. Tony died in 2023. The winery is still family-owned, led today by their daughters Lisa and Ariana, and Sara Fowler has made the wine since 2006.
The estate is known as much for its grounds as its wine. A sycamore-lined drive, hand-pruned by Tony into an arch, leads to a 50-foot stone tower with a copper roof, completed in 2003, that holds a 1906 stained glass window by Franz Mayer of Munich. Marble and bronze sculptures sit among gardens and a koi pond, and the 30-acre Rutherford vineyard was certified organic in 2007.
PEJU focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties, including estate wines from the Rutherford AVA. The tasting room is open daily and keeps things relaxed. Walk-ins can try the Taster's Trio, while the seated tastings, a Heritage flight of five reds and a Chef's Tasting with food pairings are booked ahead. Families are welcome, with wine served to guests 21 and over.
$40 for the Taster's Trio (three wines, walk-in friendly) and $65 for the Classic Seated Tasting. $85 for the Heritage Tasting of five red wines. $125 for the Large Group Tasting (8 to 14 guests). $165 for the Chef's Tasting Experience, five wine and food pairings, Thursday to Sunday.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

PEJU's tasting room opens at 11 a.m., so the day starts a little later than usual. Harvest Inn, a garden resort at the south end of St. Helena, is about 7 minutes from PEJU, and Auberge du Soleil, on the hillside above Rutherford, is about 9 minutes away. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.
Start with the Classic Seated Tasting ($65), or the walk-in friendly Taster's Trio ($40). The Heritage Tasting ($85) pours five red wines and needs a reservation. Leave a few minutes for the gardens and the tower's stained glass window.
About 18 minutes away. A Stags Leap District winery on the Silverado Trail with wine caves dug into its hillside, including a Cabernet Cave 130 feet underground. The Estate Tasting is $60 and about 60 minutes, for up to 6 guests. By reservation; open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
About 10 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29 just north of Yountville, open daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 8 minutes away. A Rutherford winery whose estate fountains have become a local landmark, with tastings on the terrace or in the tasting room. Flights are $75 to $125, about 90 minutes; last seating at 4:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended and walk-ins are welcome when space allows; leashed dogs are welcome.
Back by 4:40 p.m., six hours after pickup.
Adds about an hour and a half. A winery on Main Street in St. Helena with a historic Cask Room. The Winery Exclusives tasting ($50, 90 minutes) takes walk-ins as space allows, though a reservation is recommended. The tasting room is open until 5:30 p.m.
About $175 to $270 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.
Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.
