Katali is the Downer family's label. Michael and Jackie Downer named it for their daughters, Katie and Allie, as a legacy that connects them to the valley where the family has roots going back four generations; Michael's grandfather owned property in Napa Valley in the 1950s. The 2015 vintage was the first release.
The wine is a single Cabernet Sauvignon from the Caldwell Vineyard in the Coombsville appellation, aged in new French oak and made in tiny amounts by winemaker Richard Sowalsky: five barrels of the 2021, six of the 2019. Jackie spent ten years at Wilson Daniels working with houses such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Salon.
Katali sells mostly through its allocation: members receive six bottles each fall, invitations to events and tastings by appointment. That makes a visit personal rather than a stop at a tasting bar, and the time and place are set with the family. Write ahead and we arrange it on your behalf.
Tasting fees to be verified upon reservation.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Archer Hotel Napa or Westin Verasa Napa.
Archer Hotel Napa, a downtown Napa hotel with a rooftop bar, is about 15 minutes from the Coombsville area, and Westin Verasa Napa, a hotel by the Oxbow district in downtown Napa, about 15 minutes away. The day below fits about five and a half hours, and extra time can be added by the hour.
A tasting by appointment with the Downer family; the place, format and any fee are confirmed when it is set. We plan about an hour.
About 15 minutes away, depending on where Katali hosts. A Coombsville hillside estate whose winery is built underground between the vines and an oak grove. A private visit by advance inquiry, one party at a time; we plan about an hour, and any fee is confirmed by the estate.
About 12 minutes away. Lunch at Oenotri on First Street in downtown Napa, an Italian restaurant serving lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.
About 12 minutes away. Pomerol-inspired blends of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, poured at the Blackbird Lab, a modern, intimate tasting room in south Napa. The Blackbird Flight is $75, about an hour. Reservations at least 24 hours ahead, Monday to Saturday; last tasting at 3:30 p.m.
Back by about 3:20 p.m., about five and a half hours after pickup.
About $75 per person for Blackbird, plus the fees for Katali and Covert Estate, which are confirmed when the visits are set.
Katali's tastings are arranged with the family and offered mainly to allocation members, so the time may move; we build the day around it. Blackbird hosts Monday to Saturday. Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting.
