St. Helena · Napa Valley
A small family winery on the historic Hayne Vineyard, in the same family since 1872, and a suggested six-hour day of tasting around it.
Book a Six-Hour Wine Tour
In 1872 William Bowers Bourn and his wife Sarah, daughter of Captain George Chase, bought this St. Helena property as a weekend and summer retreat after years of visiting the nearby White Sulphur Springs resort. Their youngest child, Maud, married William Alston Hayne, and the land has been called the Hayne Vineyard ever since. Andrew Simpson founded Chase Cellars in 1998, and Katie Hayne Simpson, the fifth generation, has led it since 2012.
The Hayne Vineyard sits at the foot of the Mayacamas, on a gravelly alluvial fan near Sulphur Canyon, which brings cool afternoon air earlier than on the valley floor. It was replanted to Zinfandel and Petite Sirah in 1902 and 1903, and some of those heritage Zinfandel vines still produce. About 45 of the original 120 acres remain in vines, and Hayne fruit also goes to Turley, Nickel & Nickel and Corison.
Russell Bevan has made the wines since 2014, including single-varietal Chase wines and Bourn blends. A visit is a private tasting and tour of the historic vineyard with the current releases, and it takes about 75 minutes. Tastings are by appointment Tuesday through Saturday, and the small team asks guests to arrive on time, since early or late arrivals cannot always be accommodated.
$45 for a private tasting and tour of the Hayne Vineyard with current releases, about 75 minutes. The fee is waived with each 3-bottle purchase per person or a new wine club sign-up.
Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.
