About the Winery

Steve and Linda Sherwin bought a 30-acre property at the top of Spring Mountain in 1996. Their first wine, the 1996 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, was released in 1999. The family still runs the estate, and their son Matt is now the winemaker and general manager.

More than 17 acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in the Spring Mountain District, around a private lake. Sherwin is also the home of the Patriotic Pour. After 9/11 the Sherwins made a hand-etched, hand-painted flag magnum for a charity auction, and the winery says it is the only company in the country with federal approval to put the American flag on an alcohol label.

The Glass Fire burned the winery to the ground in September 2020, and the family rebuilt. The new tasting room came back online in 2023 and feels like a living room, with a fireplace in winter and a patio looking down the vineyard rows to the lake. Guests can picnic on the deck or try the Par One golf hole, which supports the Folds of Honor charity.

Tasting Fees

$95 per person (plus booking fees) for the Winery Tasting in the tasting room or on the patio. The fee is waived with a minimum wine purchase.

Tasting fees as of September 2026. Wineries set and collect their own fees, and they change from time to time.

Pickup at 10:00 a.m. from a nearby hotel such as Harvest Inn or Alila Napa Valley.

10:00 · Pickup at Harvest Inn or Alila Napa Valley

The winding drive up Spring Mountain Road to Sherwin takes about 25 minutes, so the first tasting is booked for 10:30. Harvest Inn, a garden resort beside the vineyards at the south end of St. Helena, and Alila Napa Valley, a Hyatt resort in St. Helena, are both at the foot of the mountain. The day below fits a six-hour tour, and extra time can be added by the hour.

10:30 · Sherwin Family Vineyards

The Winery Tasting ($95), by the fire on cool days or on the patio above the vineyard and lake. Allow about an hour and 15 minutes, with time for a look around the estate.

12:10 · Rombauer Vineyards

About 25 minutes away. Down the mountain and across the valley to a family winery on a knoll just off the Silverado Trail, with gardens of more than 100 kinds of plants and flowers. The tasting of five wines is $25 and runs about an hour. Reservations recommended, for parties of up to 6; leashed dogs are welcome outdoors.

1:30 · Lunch at Mustards Grill

About 20 minutes away. Lunch at Mustards Grill on Highway 29, the self-described garden-driven truck stop deluxe where winemakers lunch with truckers, open daily. Prefer a picnic? We can arrange a catered picnic at a winery that allows one; the cost is quoted when you book.

2:40 · Groth Vineyards & Winery

About 7 minutes away. A family winery founded in 1982 in a mission-style building on the Oakville valley floor, which says it was the first in the U.S. to make a 100-point wine. A Taste of Groth is $50 and takes 45 minutes. By appointment, open seven days; 21 and over.

3:25 · Back to your hotel

Back by 4:00 p.m., six hours after pickup.

Optional: St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery

Adds about an hour. A Rutherford estate on Highway 29, about 8 minutes north of Groth. Walk-ins are welcome Monday to Thursday when space allows (reservations are highly recommended Friday to Sunday), with the Winemaker's Selection tasting at $46. Open daily until 5 p.m.

About $170 per person in tasting fees for the three wineries, paid directly to each winery.

Three wineries is the right pace for a day of serious tasting. The fourth stop is there if the day allows.

Every tour is custom. This day is a starting point: your chauffeur will shape it around what matters to you, and we plan multi-day tours for guests who want to see more of wine country.
